Cultural Diversity
Cultural Diversity invited me into the world of celebrating and exploring the differences of students. I was introduced to so many different aspects of diversity that I had not previously thought as much about. It is the duty of educators in this country to encourage tolerance and provide students with multicultural education while holding all students to the highest standards and encouraging them to embrace diversity instead of fear it.

My Philosophy of education is always evolving and changing as I learn more through my course work, and share more experiences in the classroom. This artifact explores Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream that I so passionately share, that we will one day live in a world where children can be seen for only who they are on the inside, and not their differences in race, culture, or any other thing that sets them apart. In my philosophy I discuss why a diverse classroom is important to me and ways that I plan to celebrate my students’ differences everyday as well as what it means to be culturally responsive. I also explain how I plan to use multicultural curriculum in my classroom at all times through use of lessons and literature instead of secluding teaching about different cultures to a specific allotted time of the year. My philosophy will continue to grow as I grow as a professional, but this is a great start to who I want to be and what I believe in as a multicultural educator of diverse students. |

I attended a cultural experience titled "Poverty 101" in which I was able to put myself in the shoes of someone actually living in poverty. This artifact is a rundown of my experience from the point of view of the character I portrayed as well as my own personal feeling about poverty and impoverished children in school as a future teacher.

In order to be a culturally responsive teacher and celebrate all of my students I have put together a collection of multicultural literature for use in my future classroom. These stories will help my students to either connect with the characters in them, or learn about others who are different from themselves.

I teamed up with another future teacher to explore socioeconomic class differences and challenges and how our future students may be affected by these factors.

I was lucky enough to spend 20 hours in a 3rd grade class with a wonderful professional educator. This artifact is the product of a small interview I conducted with her during my time in her classroom in which I was able to ask her questions I had about her views on multicultural education and her own strengths and weaknesses as a teacher.
